Peptide shelf life: how long does a vial actually last?

The two clocks on every vial, what the printed date does and does not tell you, and why the only reliable shelf life is the one you record yourself.

Shelf life is the question people ask about a vial and the question a vial is worst at answering. There is usually a date printed on the glass, it usually does not say what it is a date for, and it was almost certainly printed before the vial ever reached you. This is a guide to what that date can and cannot tell you, and what to record so the question stops being a guess.

There are two clocks, not one

Every vial has two entirely separate shelf lives, and conflating them is the single most common mistake in this space.

A supplier's quoted shelf life almost always refers to the dry clock. It tells you nothing about how long you have after mixing. The two numbers are not related, and the dry one being generous does not make the wet one generous.

What the printed date actually means

Look at four vials from four sources and you will typically find four different date formats, none of which state what the date represents. A bare 10/2026 could be an expiry. It could be the date the batch was made. It could be the date the label was printed. There is no convention, and no standard requiring one.

This matters more than it sounds. If it is a manufacture date, the usable window runs forward from it and you need the supplier's stated shelf life to work out where you are. If it is an expiry, the window runs backwards to a manufacture date you do not know. Same six characters on the glass, two completely different meanings, and no way to tell from the vial alone.

There is a further wrinkle worth knowing: on much of what circulates in this space, the label is applied by the reseller rather than the original manufacturer. What actually shortens the window

Degradation is not a cliff you fall off on the printed date. It is a gradual process, and four things drive it:

None of these leave a visible mark, which is the whole problem. A vial that spent a hot afternoon on a kitchen bench looks exactly like one that did not.

When a vial stops being trustworthy

There are visible signs worth knowing, though their absence proves nothing. Cloudiness, floating particles, a colour change, or powder that has visibly caked or shrunk away from the glass are all reasons to treat a vial as compromised. Storage guidance and shelf-life expectations vary by compound, so check the specific entry in the peptide reference and follow the supplier's stated window rather than assuming one rule covers everything.

The harder truth is that most degradation is invisible. You cannot see potency. Which means the question "is this still good?" is not answered by looking at the vial — it is answered by knowing its history.

The only shelf life you can actually rely on

The printed date is somebody else's claim about a vial's past. The date you write down is a fact about its present. If you record the day you opened a vial and the day you mixed it, you always know exactly where you are on both clocks, regardless of what the label says or who printed it.

That is a two-second habit and it converts the entire question from a guess into arithmetic. Whatever you use, record it at the moment it happens. Reconstructing it three weeks later from memory is how half-full vials end up in the bin — not because they had gone off, but because nobody could say for certain that they hadn't.

Much less time than in dry form, and it varies by compound — typically weeks rather than months, and dependent on storage temperature and how often the vial is disturbed. Follow the supplier's stated window for the specific compound, and record the date you mixed it so you always know where you are in that window.

Does the date printed on a peptide vial mean it expires then?

Not necessarily. Labels in this space frequently print a bare date with no indication of whether it is an expiry, a manufacture date or a print date, and there is no standard requiring one. If the label does not say which it is, treat it as unknown rather than assuming it is an expiry.

How long does lyophilised peptide powder last?

Sealed, dry, lyophilised powder is the most stable state and suppliers usually quote its window in months or years. That figure refers only to the dry powder and tells you nothing about how long the compound lasts after liquid is added.

Can you tell if a peptide has degraded by looking at it?

Only sometimes. Cloudiness, particles, discolouration or visibly caked powder are reasons to treat a vial as compromised. But most degradation is invisible, so a normal-looking vial is not evidence that it is intact — which is why its storage history matters more than its appearance.

Is it the fridge or the freezer for peptides?

It depends on the compound and whether it is dry or mixed. The more important principle is consistency: repeated freeze–thaw cycling is more damaging than choosing one temperature and staying there. Check the guidance for the specific compound.
