A plain-English guide to peptide storage — why cold and dark matter, the difference between lyophilised and mixed storage, and how to handle travel without guesswork.
Storage is the least glamorous part of peptide research and the easiest thing to get wrong. Peptides are chains of amino acids, and the same properties that make them biologically interesting also make them fragile: heat, light, moisture and repeated temperature swings all degrade them.
Lyophilised versus mixed
In dry, lyophilised (freeze-dried) form, peptides are relatively stable — that's the entire point of freeze-drying. Once liquid is introduced, stability drops sharply and the clock starts. This is why suppliers quote one storage window for the sealed powder and a much shorter one afterwards, and why the two should never be treated as the same thing.
The four enemies
- Heat. Room temperature is tolerable briefly for dry powder; it is not a storage plan. Never leave anything in a car.
- Light. UV degrades peptides. Keep vials in their box or anywhere dark — the crisper drawer, not the fridge door.
- Moisture. Condensation is the reason you let a cold vial come to room temperature before opening it, not after.
- Freeze–thaw cycling. Repeatedly freezing and thawing the same vial is worse than picking one temperature and staying there.
Practical habits
- Store at the back of the fridge, not in the door — door temperature swings every time it opens.
- Keep vials in an opaque container or their original packaging.
- Write the date you opened each vial on the label, or record it in your log. Memory is not a storage system.
- Never shake. Agitation can denature the peptide; swirl gently instead.
- If a solution looks cloudy, has floating particles, or has changed colour, treat it as compromised.
Travel
Travel is where most degradation happens. An insulated pouch with a cool pack handles a day comfortably; hotel minibar fridges are unreliable and often not cold. For flights, keep everything in your carry-on — hold luggage sees temperature extremes you can't control. And plan for the return leg, not just the outbound one, which is the mistake people make.
Record it, don't remember it
The single most useful storage habit is writing down the date a vial was opened and roughly how much is left. That's what converts "is this still good?" from a guess into a fact. Storage guidance for individual compounds varies, so check the specifics on each entry in the peptide reference rather than assuming one rule fits everything.
