Peptide storage: fridge vs freezer, travel and power cuts
The short version: sealed powder is happy in the fridge and better in the
freezer if you won't touch it for months. Once it's mixed, it lives in the fridge at
2–8 °C, towards the back of a middle shelf, in its box — generally quoted at around
28 days. Freezing a mixed vial buys longer, but only if you freeze it once. Heat is what
actually ruins vials, not time.1,2
Nobody loses a vial to slow, patient degradation in a fridge. They lose it to an
afternoon in a car, a fortnight in a door shelf, a shaken vial, or a mix date they never wrote
down. Here's where things should live and what to do when life gets in the way.
Sealed powder and mixed vials are two different problems
Most of the confusion online comes from people answering one question with the other's numbers.
Sealed lyophilised powder
Stable and forgiving. The fridge is fine for months. The freezer is the better home for
anything you bought ahead and won't touch for a long time. Room temperature is survivable for
shipping and short periods, but it isn't where it should live.
Reconstituted — already mixed
The clock starts the moment water goes in. Widely quoted general ranges are roughly
28 days refrigerated, around 60 days frozen, and
only a few days at room temperature. That window depends on mixing with
bacteriostatic water, which contains benzyl alcohol as a preservative; plain sterile water gives
you no such grace.1,6
Where the 28 days comes from: it is the standard
beyond-use period for a preserved multi-dose vial once a needle has been through the stopper —
28 days from first puncture unless the manufacturer says otherwise. It is a sterility and
good-practice figure rather than a stability assay for any one peptide, which is exactly why the
instructions on your own vial come first.1

Not the door. The door swings through room temperature every time somebody
fancies a snack, and that repeated cycling is worse than a slightly warmer but steady shelf. CDC
storage guidance says the same thing for vaccines: never the door shelves, never near the cooling
vents.2
Not the salad drawer, where things get damp and forgotten — also called out
by name in the CDC toolkit as an unstable spot.2
Put a cheap fridge thermometer in there once — you are aiming for 2–8 °C.
Domestic fridges are frequently nowhere near where their dial claims to be, and dormitory-style
mini-fridges are explicitly advised against.2
Freezer, for the long game
Sealed powder you bought ahead, or a mixed vial you know you won't open for weeks.
Freeze once. Freezing and thawing is itself a stress that drives unfolding and
aggregation, so repeated cycles are the thing to avoid. Thaw in the fridge rather than on the
counter or under a tap, and don't put it back in afterwards.4,5
Avoid a frost-free freezer if you have the choice — the automatic defrost
cycle warms and re-freezes everything inside on a timer, which is exactly what you were trying
to avoid.
What actually ruins a vial
In rough order of how much damage they do:
Heat — by a wide margin. Higher temperatures accelerate the chemical routes
that degrade a peptide, so a warm room, a car, a windowsill or a steamy bathroom costs more in a
weekend than weeks of fridge time.4,5
Light, UV especially, which drives oxidation of the light-sensitive residues.
Keep vials boxed or in a drawer, not on display.4
Repeated freeze–thaw. Once is fine. In and out repeatedly is not.
Agitation. Shaking unfolds peptide at the air–water interface — a
well-documented cause of aggregation, and the reason commercial formulations add surfactants. Add
water down the side of the glass, swirl gently or roll it between your palms, and give it
time.4,5
Contamination. Piercing the stopper starts a clock on sterility as well as
stability. Swab the stopper with alcohol every single time, use a fresh needle each time, and never
share a vial.1
What appearance tells you
Cloudiness, floaters or discolouration are a reason to discard a
vial. But clear liquid is not proof that anything survived — degradation is
invisible. That's the entire reason to write the date down rather than trust your memory.
Travelling with vials
A small insulated cool bag with a gel pack handles a day of travel easily.
Wrap the pack in a cloth so it isn't pressed against the glass — direct contact with a frozen
pack can partially freeze a mixed vial, and a warm pack does nothing at all.
Flying: carry-on, never checked luggage. Holds can spend hours unheated.
Medically necessary liquids, ice packs and cool packs are allowed through security in reasonable
quantities if you declare them at the checkpoint — take the box or pharmacy label so it's
obvious what it is.7
Check the rules for your airline and your destination before you go.
Countries differ enormously on what you may bring in, and that's on you, not the airline.
Hotel fridges are often barely cool. If you're there a while, put a
thermometer in, or ask reception for a proper fridge.
Cars are the classic write-off. A glovebox in summer will finish a vial in
an afternoon. Nothing travels in the car on its own.
Power cuts
Don't open the door
A closed fridge holds usable temperature for roughly four hours. A freezer
holds for about 48 hours if full, 24 if half full — provided you leave it shut.
Every look costs you some of that.3
If the outage is going to run long, move vials into a cool bag with
gel packs, or into a neighbour's working fridge. Official guidance for vaccines is the same shape:
keep the door shut, record the temperature, and don't bin anything on a guess.8
When the power returns, judge it by temperature, not by the clock. A fridge
thermometer with a min/max reading is ideal. The low-tech version: freeze a cup of water with a
coin resting on top — if you come home and the coin has sunk, the freezer thawed while you were
out.
A mixed vial that sat at room temperature for a few hours has lost some of its window
rather than become instantly useless. One that sat warm for a day or more, or that thawed and
refroze, is a judgement call — and the sensible call is usually to stop counting on it. Note what
happened in your log, because otherwise you'll be second-guessing that vial for a month.
The boring habits that matter most
Write the mix date on the vial the second you reconstitute it. There are
free printable labels for exactly this.
Keep the box. It's light protection and it's where the storage instructions are.
Keep a thermometer in the fridge you actually use.
Log the vial so the expiry date isn't living in your head — that's what the app is for.
Store bacteriostatic water at controlled room temperature, as its own label
says; it doesn't want the fridge.6
Keep syringes and needles clean, dry and out of the sun — and know
how to dispose of them before you have a jar of them.
Common questions
Does a mixed vial go off the day it hits 28 days?
No — it's a general figure, not a cliff edge. It's a sensible point to stop relying on the
vial, which is a different thing from a chemistry deadline.
Can I refrigerate sealed powder that arrived at room temperature?
Yes, and that's the normal thing to do. Sealed powder tolerates shipping; getting it into the
fridge or freezer on arrival is the right move.
Is it worth freezing a mixed vial I'm using weekly?
Usually not. You'd be freezing and thawing repeatedly, which is the one thing to avoid. Keep
what's in use in the fridge.
Does the type of water change storage?
Yes. Bacteriostatic water contains benzyl alcohol as a preservative, which is what makes a
multi-dose window reasonable at all. Plain sterile water has no preservative, so the practical
window is much shorter.1,6
