Reconstitution simply means returning a freeze-dried powder to liquid form by adding a sterile diluent. It's a concept worth understanding properly, because it explains why peptides are shipped the way they are and why storage windows change the moment liquid is involved.

Why freeze-dried in the first place?
Lyophilisation removes water under vacuum, leaving a stable cake of powder in the vial. Peptides degrade far more slowly without water present, so freeze-drying is what makes shipping and shelf storage practical at all. It's a preservation strategy, not a formality — which is also why the powder is the stable state and the solution is the perishable one.
What the diluent does
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing a small amount of a preservative (typically benzyl alcohol) that inhibits bacterial growth. That distinguishes it from plain sterile water, which contains no preservative and therefore offers no protection once a vial has been entered more than once. Which diluent is appropriate depends entirely on the compound and its intended use — another reason this is a clinician-and-supplier question, not an app question.
Why the storage clock changes
Once liquid is present, chemical degradation pathways that were effectively paused become active again. This is why the same compound will have one figure quoted for the sealed, dry vial and a much shorter one afterwards — and why the date a vial was first opened is the single most useful thing to write down.
Handling principles worth knowing
- Let a cold vial reach room temperature before opening to avoid condensation.
- Add diluent gently down the side of the vial rather than directly onto the powder.
- Swirl, never shake — agitation can denature a peptide.
- Let the powder dissolve on its own rather than forcing it.
- Return to cold, dark storage promptly once mixed.
