A practical guide to keeping an organised peptide research log β what to record, how to stay consistent, and why most spreadsheets collapse after three weeks.
Almost everyone starts with a spreadsheet. It works beautifully for about two weeks, and then one skipped row turns into three, the vial column stops matching reality, and you quietly stop opening the file. The problem isn't discipline β it's that a spreadsheet asks you to be an administrator at exactly the moment you're least willing to be one.
Why spreadsheets fail
- Friction at the wrong moment. Logging happens in your kitchen or bathroom, on your phone, standing up. Unhide a column, pinch to zoom, tap the right cell β that's four actions too many.
- No memory of what's left. A spreadsheet doesn't know a vial is nearly empty. You find out at the worst possible time.
- No pattern recognition. Rows of numbers don't show you that your sleep score drifted for three weeks. A chart does, instantly.
- No history you trust. One retroactive guess ("I think that was Tuesday?") and the whole dataset becomes anecdote.
What actually belongs in a log
A useful log is short. If it takes more than fifteen seconds you will abandon it. Five fields carry almost all the value:
- What β which compound, by name. Consistent naming matters more than you'd think; "BPC" and "BPC-157" become two datasets.
- When β date and time, captured automatically rather than typed.
- Where β the site used, so rotation is visible instead of remembered.
- Amount recorded β whatever number you decide to write down, in your own words. A log records; it doesn't advise.
- One subjective marker β energy, sleep, soreness, mood. Pick one and keep it for months. A single consistent metric beats six inconsistent ones.
Add a vial ledger, not just entries
This is the part almost every system misses. Entries tell you what happened; a ledger tells you what you have. Recording when a vial was opened, and letting the app decrement as you log, means you're never guessing whether you have enough left for the week. It also gives you a real cost picture over time, which is often more sobering β and more motivating β than any other number in the app.
The habit rules that actually work
- Log at the moment, not at night. Retroactive logging is where accuracy dies.
- Never leave a gap blank-but-unmarked. Record a skip as a skip. A skipped day is data; a missing day is noise.
- Review weekly, not daily. Day-to-day movement is mostly noise. Week-over-week is where signal lives.
- Keep one metric for at least eight weeks. Changing what you measure resets your baseline and wastes the weeks you already logged.
What to do with the log once you have it
Two things. First, look for trends, not events β the direction of a line over a month tells you far more than any single day. Second, bring it to your clinician. A dated, consistent record of what you did and how you felt is dramatically more useful in a ten-minute appointment than trying to reconstruct three months from memory.
